Planting Seeds in Brooklyn

1914 postcard: General Post Office and Brooklyn Eagle building.

The Brooklyn Eagle was a daily newspaper published for 114 years from 1841 to 1955. At one point, it was the afternoon paper with the largest daily circulation in the United States.

Its real estate section featured some of Brooklyn’s most beautiful homes, many which still exist today in Ditmas Park and Prospect Park South.  This area has been re-christened Victorian Flatbush by realtor Peter Gumas, who not only sells in the neighborhood but lives there as well.

Gumas, a former marketing executive with the National Basketball Association, has embedded himself in the neighborhood by going to door to door and greeting residents with custom Victorian Flatbush Tote Bags that in the past included Crocus Bulbs and currently boast Forget-Me-Not seeds.

Gumas created a contest for area residents to photograph the flowers grown from the Crocus Bulbs, which will be reviewed by an impartial neighborhood jury.  Results will be announced on May 15th 2021 and the winner will receive a Classic Plus Gotham Edition 3 speed bicycle.

Gumas is the antithesis of the reality show broker in a chauffeured car.  He enjoys engaging with the public and literally does so by going door to door. “People love this  neighborhood and we like to add to that sense of pride, hence the tote bags and contests.”

With the tote bag, Gumas included a flyer with these Sam Cooke lyrics, “A little flower that blooms in May.  A lovely sunset at the end of a day. Someone helping a stranger along the way. That’s heaven to me .”

“The response has been incredible,” said Gumas.  People approach us and say ‘Thank you so much.  We love what you do for our neighborhood!’
