Fire Todd Bowles

We are long suffering Jets fans: Disappointment and heartbreak are our birthrights, but if we can’t win, at least let us be entertained.  After a long week at work, Americans retreat to the sanctuary of their homes, where they seek and (hopefully) receive solace from their sports teams.

This is not possible for the NY Jets fans when their coach is Todd Bowles.  Bowles is the Mr. Cellophane of NFL coaches.  He displays no emotion whatsoever and in return receives no respect (from players and fans) and clearly produces no discipline from his team.

In the past when the Jets didn’t win, at least we had the charismatic – if sometimes buffoonish – Rex Ryan to instill a sense of hope and faith as opposed to Boring Bowles, who makes watching paint dry seem like an Olympic sport.  Repeated viewing of Bowles’s press conferences will cure any insomniac.

Entertainment value aside, Bowles has failed to instill a sense of discipline in his players or coaches.  Every Hall of Fame coach has functioned as a despot, and for good reason: football is a warlike sport that requires utter devotion to what can only be a team effort.

The lack of respect for Bowles was recently displayed when running back Isaiah Crowell conducted a boneheaded [enter your favored euphemism here] celebration and got penalized, he should have been benched.  Cornerback Trumaine Johnson followed that with personal fouls and the game quickly unraveled.  Last Sunday, in another horrendous defeat, Jaguars coach Doug Marone executed a two point conversion in garbage time with the sole intention of running up the score to embarrass the Jets.  Clearly, Bowles has also lost the respect of other coaches.

The Jets are rebuilding.  Have we found our franchise QB?  Check. Can we shore up our offensive line with enormous CAP space and through the draft?  Absolutely!  However, fixing holes is one thing and creating a culture of victory and discipline is quite another.  No rookie QB has ever gone to Disneyland, so it is fine to have tempered expectations for this season.  But moving forward, the Jets will need a leader who owns the locker room.

Tick, Tock Todd Bowles.
