In the spring of 2009 I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. At the time, I was 53 years old, weighed 215 lbs and felt miserable. My symptoms included: constant hunger, total exhaustion and despite daily exercise (and what I thought was a diet) the inability to lose weight.

After the diagnosis, my doctor prescribed metformin, which helps control blood glucose levels. I then began a diet that eliminated most carbohydrates, especially white bread, white rice and pasta. This diet, combined with a daily exercise program has enabled me to lose 30 lbs (I weigh 185) and manage my blood sugar effectively. Maintaining my current diet is not difficult. In fact, living (as many people do) with diabetes unchecked is far more of a strain! As a result of my program, I now have more energy, require much less sleep and have the physique of a much younger person.

I have lectured on both diet and fitness and I’m always happy to share my regimen with others. Please don’t hesitate to contact me via email with any questions.

Type 2 Diabetes: Much of the food we eat is turned into sugar in the blood for our bodies to use for energy. A hormone produced by the pancreas called insulin helps sugar in our blood get into the cells of our bodies. If your body doesn’t make enough insulin or if the insulin doesn’t work the way it should, blood sugar can’t get into your cells and instead stays in your blood, raising your blood sugar level.

It’s important to keep your blood sugar controlled, because when too much sugar stays in your blood for a long time, it can damage blood vessels and nerves.
